  1. 1) The causes of ocean noise are Naval sonar blasts, air guns used in oil/gas exploration, and commercial ships. Since many sea mammals have a heightened sense of hearing due to make up for the lack of visibility under the sea, these loud noises can cause permanent loss of hearing.

    2) Yes, I do believe the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective because the article mentions that for the most part if the design in general as well as the propeller design is altered then not only will the ships be quieter but also more fuel efficient in some cases.

  2. 1) The causes of the ocean noise are the air guns used in gas exploration, commercial ships, and sonar blasts. It impacts the marine life by having them loss their hearing because they have strong hearing living under under nit being able to rely on their eyes all the time.

    2) The efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective because it would quieter the ships, sonar blasts, and explorations; to save the hearing of marine life .

  3. 1.The causes are human: the sonar blasts of military exercises, the booms from air guns used in oil and gas exploration, and the whine from fleets of commercial ships that constantly crisscross the global seas. the impact it has on marine life would include as Marine experts say the rising clamor is particularly dangerous to whales, which depend on their acute hearing to locate food and one another, and in the long run could potentially cause a loss of hearing.

    2. one of the efforts would be to seek and document human-made noises in the ocean and transform the results into the world’s first large sound maps. The ocean visualizations use bright colors to symbolize the sounds radiating out through the oceanic depths, frequently over distances of hundreds of miles. and the government already has some authority to regulate oceanic sound in United States waters through the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act, though exemptions to these laws exist for the military. so overall i think that these efforts that the federal government makes would be very effective.

  4. 1. The causes are sonar blasts or military exercises, booms from air guns used in gas and oil exploration, and the whine from commercial ships. The outcomes is marine life that depend on sound for food have a harder time finding food, in addition it can sauce some to become deaf.

    2. Yes the effort of the federal government will be helpful because these loud noises will go away with the new technology.

  5. 1. There are several causes of the ocean noise and they're all human caused. They include sonar blasts coming from military exercises, booms from air guns used in oil and gas exploration, and the noise coming from commercial fleets.
    2. I do believe that the efforts coming from the federal government will be effective because creating new technologies that produce less noise will help marine life

  6. 1. Humans have caused the ocean noise due to their military exercises, air guns, and the noise of commercial ships continuously traveling across the ocean, which are louder and more noticeable than natural ocean sounds. The noise is harmful to organisms that use their sense of hearing to find food and other marine life, possibly throwing them off course and obstructing them from finding what they need.

    2. I think that the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will not be immediately effective as people are getting used to the new technology and learning how to make sense of it (because we have not had a way of showing our noise pollution before now), but once that is out of the way, it will definitely help the environment by giving people a method to see the amount of noise pollution that they are putting out, which could possibly help them rethink the way that they influence the environment and make smarter decisions for the future.

  7. 1) What are the causes of the ocean noise and how does it impact the marine life?

Much of the ocean noise is anthropogenic because of things such as sonar blasts which include military exercises as well as blasts from air guns. This can detrimentally effect animals because many animals rely less on their sense of sight when looking for food and more to their sense of hearing because the ocean is often hard to see very far in. Through the sounds waves, they can hear small movements from hundred of miles away. If the animals go deaf, they will not be able to hunt and find food and therefore will begin to die off, killing biodiversity.

    2) Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?

The efforts by the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective because not only will the sounds be reduced, but in some cases, some ships will become more efficient which is very beneficial. However, if the government fails to regulate and enforce these laws, the laws will fail miserably and no progress will be made.

  8. 1) What are the causes of the ocean noise and how does it impact the marine life?
The ocean noise is caused by the air guns used in gas exploration, commercial ships, and sonar blasts. Marine life has really good hearing to make up for the lack of visibility underwater, and these ocean noises impact them by causing permanent loss of hearing. This inhibits their ability to find food and hear other marine life, which can be a safety issue.

    2) Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?
I do think the government's efforts will be effective because it will reduce noise pollution by quieting the ships, sonar blasts, and explorations, which would save the hearing of the marine life.

  9. What are the causes od the ocean noise and how does it impact marine life?
The causes of the ocean noise include military excersises and sonar blasts, commercial ships and oil explorations also create this noise. This impacts marine life in hunting issues as they rely on hearing more often to survive.

Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?
The efforts of the fed. Government will be effective to reduce the noise because it focuses on the reduction of the noises by regulation.

  10. 1) the ocean noise is caused by gas explosions in air guns, commercial vessels, and sonar. Marine life is impacted by this and there are problems. due to low visibility, they use this sound to navigate and it throws them off

    2) There should be research into how to lower noise pollution, but it isnt that important, we have bigger problems

  11. 1) What are the causes of the ocean noise and how does it impact the marine life?
    - Causes range from sonar, and oil exploration to shipment barges. The impact is excessive noise and confusion to marine animals. especially whales who rely on echolocation to navigate and survive.

    2) Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?
    - I think that the efforts taken will be effective for some.. but on a large scale, no. Not enough people care, and there isn't enough media on it. There will be groups that fight sound pollution, but I think that over all there wont be significant change because the sound is involving oil, the military, and world trade. Three of the most substantial things a country wont be willing to change or give up.

  12. 1) What are the causes of the ocean noise and how does it impact the marine life?

The causes of the ocean noise include the oil and gas explorations that make noise through the guns, the sonars that are used by the Navy, as well as commercial fleets making a lot of noise over the global sea. The effect of the sound drastically impacts the animals because they use echolocation to communicate with other marine life and these noises only cause them to be confused.

    2) Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?
I think that the federal governments efforts to reduce the noise of ships is effective because they are trying to control the level of noise the sonar blasts and ships make.

  13. 1) What are the causes of the ocean noise and how does it impact the marine life?
Marine noise pollution comes from concussions of military and gas/oil explosions as well as the passive noise of ships. Where light does not penetrate well, many marine animals rely on hearing to navigate and locate food and each other.
    2) Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?
Personally, I doubt it. International waters are extremely hard to effect. I'm sure quiet ships can be built, the fleet is aging, and I didn't see that completely addressed. And, of course, the military won't be making many concessions...

  14. 1. Ocean noise is mostly caused by humans, noise from commercial ships, sonar blasts from military exercises, and the sounds of airguns used in gas and oil exploration. These noises are loud and obnoxious for sea life, they render echolocation useless causing sea creatures to become disoriented and confused.
    2. I think efforts of the federal government to reduce noise pollution will be ineffective, although i do think their efforts will curb the increase in noise pollution.

  17. 1. Ocean noise is primarily a human caused anomaly. Some of the most common causes of ocean noise are the noise produced by ocean liners and other ships, sonar from naval exercises and underwater exploration. These noises cause echolocation to be useless, decreasing the ability of many marine species to find food and shelter.

2.its highly unlikely. the majority of the world's oceans are international, and aren't really governed by any specific organization or nation. as such, they are extremely hard to regulate, thus making government intervention into ocean noise effectively useless.

  18. 1.) The cause of the Ocean noises is due mostly to air guns, and military exercises, also the noise from commercial ships that continuously travel across the ocean. These ships are very loud and quite noticeable in comparison to the normal ocean sounds. The noise is harmful to marine life that use their hearing to find food and mates. The noise can throw them off course and cause them to have a difficult time finding what they need.

2.) I believe that the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective after a little bit of time. It will help to reduce the sounds, and in some cases the ships could become more efficient and therefore has a very positive effect on this problem. In order to make sure that this does work out though they will need to do a succesful job enforcing laws.

THIS IS ANYA. I AM SIMPLY USING JORDAN JANOFF'S COMPUTER.

  19. 1. ocean noise is an issue caused mostly by humans. Military exercises, ocean liners, cargo ships, etc. This noise is very harmful to marine life who require silence to communicate to other animals.

    2. the efforts from the federal government may be helpful in reducing ocean noise, but its hard to tell for sure until some time has passed and we can observe the effects.

  20. 1. The noise pollution is caused by military practice exercises, air guns used for oil drilling rigs, commercial vessels and tug boats. This noise is very detrimental to marine life that uses sounds and sonar to communicate to make up for the poor lighting in the ocean. They cant hunt or mate as effectively with the disrupting noise from commercial use.
    2. I believe that it would be difficult for the federal government to place effective regulations because a lot of the problems occur in international waters or by boats that dont belong to the US. The more effective way to regulate the noise pollution would be to establish regulations within the International Maritime Organization. This would allow regulations to be placed on international ships.

  21. 1) Noise pollution is caused by humans and the machines they use in the ocean. These machines are used for exploration, for military exercises, etc. All the noise that these machines and human technology makes causes lots of harm to the marine wildlife because they rely on echolocation a lot of the times to find their way and food, but this can not be done when there's so much noise.

    2) I don't believe the government would be able to regulate all of the noise pollution maybe just within the US oceans but nowhere else because it would also depend on the government of other countries to try and control this issue

  22. 1) What are the causes of the ocean noise and how does it impact the marine life?

Humans cause ocean noise with military practices, ocean exploration, ships, and by hunting for gas. The problem is that marine creatures rely on hearing to find food and friends and flee foes. This causes hearing loss amongst them.

    2) Do you think the efforts of the federal government to reduce the noise pollution will be effective?

I think the federal government has a hard time working together to accomplish things. Also, oceans are spread throughout the world and so it is up to various governments to cooperate, which we all know doesn't happen that often. Of course, some ships can be made quieter but that's probably an expensive investment that massive corporations won't be interested in. I know several people who are going on cruises this break which to me seems incredibly wasteful, distasteful, and noisy. However, the fact that young people just don't care about the ecological footprint huge cruise ships can have, shows how far we have to go in protecting marine life.
